Asana vs ClickUp (2026): Which Should You Choose?

Asana vs ClickUp comes down to clarity versus breadth: Asana scores 9.0/10 in our review and ClickUp 8.9/10. Choose Asana if you want polished, easy-to-adopt task management that many teams can share, linked to goals and portfolios; choose ClickUp if you want tasks, docs, chat, sprints and time tracking in one workspace at a lower per-user price, and are willing to invest in setup. Below we compare current pricing (including ClickUp's AI add-ons), ease of use, planning, Agile support, automation, AI and user ratings.

Key takeaways

Quick verdict

Asana and ClickUp are both capable, well-rated work management platforms, but they are built on different ideas. Asana is deliberately focused: a clean structure of projects and tasks, one owner per task, and goals and portfolios that show leaders how work connects to strategy. ClickUp aims to replace several apps at once: tasks, Docs, Whiteboards, Chat, Forms, sprints, time tracking and dashboards in one highly configurable workspace.

  • Pick Asana if you are rolling a tool out across many non-technical teams, want people productive quickly, and manage by goals or OKRs.
  • Pick ClickUp if you want the most features for the money, run sprints, want docs next to tasks, and have someone willing to design the setup.
  • Consider Wrike if resource planning, portfolio control and creative approvals at scale are the deciding factors; it is our highest-rated tool overall.

What is Asana?

Asana is a work management platform founded in 2008 and listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It organises work into teams, projects (split into sections) and tasks, each with exactly one assignee. Above projects sit portfolios, which group related projects for status reporting, and goals, which can update automatically as connected work progresses.

Asana's strengths are a clean, consistent interface, dependable cross-team coordination and unlimited free guests on paid plans. Its trade-offs are that goals, portfolios, workload and time tracking start on the Advanced plan, AI use is metered, and its resource and financial controls are lighter than PMO-focused tools.

What is ClickUp?

ClickUp is an all-in-one work platform launched in 2017. Everything sits in a hierarchy of Workspace, Spaces, Folders and Lists, and the same tasks can be shown in more than 15 views, including list, board, table, calendar, Gantt, timeline, workload and mind map. Alongside tasks, ClickUp includes Docs and wikis, Whiteboards, Chat, Forms, Goals, sprints, native time tracking and Dashboards, with an AI layer called ClickUp Brain.

ClickUp's strengths are the breadth of what you get and its low per-user price. Its trade-offs are the effort needed to configure it, a dense interface, recurring complaints about lag in busy Workspaces, and AI features that cost extra.

Checked on vendors' pricing pages on 5 October 2026. Read the full Asana pricing and ClickUp pricing breakdowns.

ClickUp is cheaper at every tier: $7 (Unlimited) and $12 (Business) per user/month billed annually, or $10 and $19 billed monthly, against Asana's $10.99 (Starter) and $24.99 (Advanced) billed annually, or $13.49 and $30.49 monthly. ClickUp requires upgrades to apply to the whole Workspace rather than to selected users.

Plan for plan: which tiers match?

The tiers bundle features differently, so compare the plan you would actually need:

  • ClickUp Unlimited ($7) already includes unlimited Gantt charts, custom fields, native time tracking, goals and portfolios. In Asana, goals, portfolios and time tracking need Advanced ($24.99). But Unlimited keeps Dashboards as a trial and limits automation executions.
  • Asana Starter ($10.99) includes timeline and Gantt views, dashboards, forms, custom fields, unlimited automation rules and AI (with allowances). It is the closest match to ClickUp Business for teams that live in dashboards.
  • ClickUp Business ($12) adds unlimited Dashboards, 5,000 automations a month, sprint points and sprint reporting, portfolio workload, mind maps, proofing and Google SSO.
  • Asana Advanced ($24.99) adds goals, portfolios, workload, approvals and proofing, time tracking, forms branching and Salesforce, Tableau and Power BI integrations.

The cost of AI

This is the most important caveat in the price comparison. Asana's AI Teammates, Dash and AI Studio are included on paid plans, with monthly allowances (5 AI Teammates and Dash requests per user, capped at 50 per account on Starter and Advanced, plus AI Studio credits), and paid top-ups at $0.50 to $0.60 per request. ClickUp's Free plan includes only limited AI trial use; full AI is a per-user add-on: Brain AI at $9 or Everything AI at $28 per user/month, with extra AI Super Credits at $10 per 10,000. ClickUp says yearly AI billing is discounted by up to 20%.

What a team actually pays

Monthly cost at three team sizes, using annual prices checked on 7 October 2026. Taxes, other add-ons and negotiated discounts are excluded, so treat these as indicative.

Team sizeClickUp UnlimitedClickUp BusinessClickUp Business + Brain AIAsana StarterAsana Advanced
5 users$35$60$105$54.95$124.95
10 users$70$120$210$109.90$249.90
25 users$175$300$525$274.75$624.75

Without AI, ClickUp is clearly cheaper. With Brain AI for every user, ClickUp Business costs more than Asana Starter, and with Everything AI ($40 per user/month on Business) it costs more than Asana Advanced. Many teams buy AI for a subset of users only, which keeps ClickUp's price advantage.

Free plans and trials

ClickUp's Free Forever plan is the more generous for small teams: unlimited members and tasks, Docs, Board, Calendar and Sprints, one Form, three Whiteboards, up to five Spaces and 100 automation executions, but only 60MB of storage, and Gantt, Dashboards and time tracking only as trials. Asana Personal includes unlimited tasks and projects with list, board and calendar views, but is limited to 2 seats per project and team, with no timelines, dashboards, forms, rules or AI.

For trials, Asana offers a self-serve Advanced trial with no credit card (its pricing page does not state the length). ClickUp does not advertise a fixed-length trial; instead, Free Forever includes trial access to paid features, and the pricing page advertises a money-back guarantee, so check the refund terms before paying.

Ease of use and setup

This is Asana's clearest win: 9/10 for ease of use against ClickUp's 7/10 in our review. Capterra users score the two closer (Asana 4.4/5, ClickUp 4.3/5 for ease of use), but the difference shows up in rollout.

Asana is opinionated. Teams, projects, sections and single-owner tasks give everyone the same mental model, so a new team can be productive on day one and projects look consistent across departments. The harder parts (portfolios, goals, workload, AI Studio) depend on discipline rather than technical setup.

ClickUp is configurable. Spaces, Folders, Lists, custom statuses, ClickApps and dozens of views mean there are many ways to model the same work, and reviewers often describe it as overwhelming at first. Teams that invest in a deliberate setup, and hide the features they do not need, get a lot back. Our guide to the work breakdown structure is a good way to decide how to split work into Spaces, Folders and Lists.

Both tools attract some complaints about performance. In Capterra's topic summaries, about 78% of ClickUp reviews that mention lag are negative, and about 60% of Asana reviews that mention performance and reliability are negative. Test either with a realistic volume of tasks during your trial.

Task management, views and Gantt charts

Both tools handle tasks, subtasks, dependencies, custom fields, recurring tasks and templates well. Two differences matter day to day. Asana allows one assignee per task, which makes ownership unambiguous; ClickUp allows multiple assignees, which suits shared work but needs clear conventions. Asana lets one task live in several projects; ClickUp offers custom task types and subtasks nested up to seven levels.

For scheduling, ClickUp goes further. Its Gantt view supports all four dependency types, automatic rescheduling, the critical path, slack time, milestones and baselines, and is unlimited from the $7 plan. Asana's timeline and Gantt views (from Starter) show dependency chains and let you compare progress against a target schedule, but its product pages do not describe critical path analysis. Both score 8/10 for planning and resource management in our review.

If date-driven scheduling matters, read our guides to Gantt charts and the critical path method, then test your real schedule in both tools.

Docs, whiteboards and chat

This is where ClickUp's all-in-one approach is most visible. ClickUp Docs support nested pages, real-time co-editing, inline comments that become tasks, version history and wikis; Whiteboards turn sticky notes into tasks; and ClickUp Chat adds channels, direct messages and calls next to the work (Chat is included from Unlimited).

Asana is task-first. It has project overviews, messages, status updates and comments, but no full docs-and-wiki workspace or whiteboard, so most Asana teams link documents from Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or a separate wiki through integrations. That is a reasonable choice if you already have those tools; ClickUp's advantage is consolidation, but only if your team actually moves its documents and conversations into it.

Agile and sprint support

ClickUp scores 9/10 for Agile and software teams in our review, against Asana's 7/10. ClickUp creates sprints as dated Lists, rolls unfinished work into the next sprint automatically, supports sprint points on Business, and reports burndown, burnup, velocity and cumulative flow. GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket integrations link commits and pull requests to tasks.

Asana supports board-based and sprint-style projects, and many product managers use it for roadmaps and launches, linking to engineering work in Jira or GitHub. Teams that need backlogs, story points and Agile reporting inside the tool will find ClickUp stronger. Large engineering organisations should also compare ClickUp vs Jira. Our free sprint planning template and guide to story points help you set up either tool.

Automation and forms

Asana includes unlimited automation rules on every paid plan. Rules pair a trigger (a form submission, a section change, an approaching due date) with an action (reassign, move, request approval, post to Slack, create a Jira issue), and AI Studio handles multi-step or judgement-based workflows.

ClickUp's automation builder is larger and includes an AI builder that drafts rules from plain language, but executions are capped: 100 on Free Forever, 1,000 on Unlimited, 5,000 a month on Business and 250,000 a month on Enterprise. Busy teams on Unlimited can reach the cap, so check your expected volume.

Both tools turn form submissions into tasks. ClickUp Forms support conditional logic and external submitters, with one Form on the free plan and unlimited from Unlimited. Asana forms start on Starter, with branching on Advanced.

AI features

Asana includes AI Teammates (more than 30 prebuilt AI agents for areas such as marketing, PMO and IT, plus custom ones), Asana Dash (AI briefs such as a morning summary of priorities) and AI Studio (a no-code builder for AI workflows) on paid plans, within the monthly allowances described above.

ClickUp Brain answers questions about your tasks, Docs and Chat, writes and summarises, and runs enterprise search across connected apps; the Brain AI add-on also includes AI chat with a choice of models, which ClickUp lists as Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini. Super Agents can be @mentioned and assigned tasks. The Everything AI tier adds the AI Notetaker, AI Fields, AI automations and dashboards, and more agent usage.

Both vendors state that customer data is not used to train third-party models, and both run agents within existing permissions. The practical difference is cost: Asana's AI is bundled but metered, while ClickUp's is a separate per-user purchase.

Goals, portfolios, reporting and workload

Asana is strongest at the strategic layer. On Advanced, portfolios show the health of many projects on one screen, goals can be broken into sub-goals and updated automatically from projects or Salesforce data, and workload shows each person's effort across a portfolio. Dashboards start on Starter, and Advanced adds Tableau and Power BI integrations. Enterprise adds capacity planning.

ClickUp includes Goals, Portfolios and a workload view from Unlimited, and portfolio-level workload on Business. Its Dashboards are actionable (you can update tasks from a card) and can be shared with clients, but unlimited Dashboards with advanced cards need Business. ClickUp connects to Tableau for deeper analysis.

For OKR-driven organisations, Asana's goals are more mature; our free OKR template helps you define them before you build anything. For small teams wanting capacity views cheaply, ClickUp offers more at a lower tier. PMOs needing formal capacity planning, budgets and financial tracking may find both lighter than Wrike.

Features compared

The checklist shows whether each capability exists on at least one plan; see the plan details above for which tier includes it. ClickUp's "Add-on" for built-in AI reflects that its full AI is sold separately.

Collaboration and guests

Asana scores 9/10 for collaboration in our review and ClickUp 8/10. Asana keeps conversation on tasks with comments, collaborators, project messages and status updates, and includes unlimited free guests on paid plans, which suits agencies and partner work. ClickUp adds assigned comments (a comment that becomes an action for a named person), Chat channels, Clips (screen recordings) and guest permissions from Unlimited.

Notification volume is a common complaint for both: "excessive notifications" is one of the most discussed topics in Asana's Capterra reviews, and ClickUp reviewers raise the same issue. Agree notification settings early in either tool.

Integrations

Asana says even its free plan includes more than 100 free integrations, including Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Workspace, Zoom, Jira, GitHub, Figma, Canva and Zapier, with Salesforce, Tableau and Power BI on Advanced.

ClickUp claims more than 1,000 integrations, a figure that includes connections through Zapier and Make. Native integrations include Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Google Drive, HubSpot, Figma and Tableau. Integrations are unlimited from Unlimited, and webhooks and automation integrations are on Business. Both tools offer a public API and MCP connectivity for AI assistants.

Security, administration and support

Asana's trust centre lists SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3 reports, ISO/IEC 27001, 27017, 27018 and 27701, CSA STAR Level 1 and HIPAA support, with data residency in Europe, Australia and Japan. ClickUp's security page lists SOC 1 Type 2, SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3 reports, ISO 27001, 27017, 27018 and 27701, ISO 42001 for AI management and PCI compliance, with HIPAA agreements and data residency (US, Europe or Asia Pacific) on Enterprise.

On both, SAML single sign-on, SCIM provisioning and audit logs are Enterprise features; ClickUp adds Google SSO on Business. Asana scores 9/10 for enterprise readiness against ClickUp's 8/10, reflecting Asana's longer record in large rollouts and its governance features on Enterprise+.

For support, ClickUp's pricing page lists 24/7 support on every plan, including Free Forever, and Capterra users rate its customer service 4.5/5. Asana offers a help centre, Asana Academy and a community forum, with a 4.3/5 customer service score on Capterra.

Which is better for your team?

Start-ups and small businesses

ClickUp usually wins. Its free plan supports unlimited members, and $7 per user buys Gantt charts, time tracking, goals and docs. Asana Starter is a good choice for small teams that value simplicity over breadth.

Cross-functional teams and larger organisations

Asana usually wins. Its consistent structure, single-owner tasks, unlimited guests, portfolios and goals make it easier to roll out across many departments and keep reporting reliable.

Product and software teams

ClickUp has the edge with native sprints, sprint points, burndown and velocity reporting, and Docs for specs.

Marketing and creative teams

Both work well. Asana suits marketing functions that coordinate many campaigns with other departments and need approvals and proofing on Advanced. ClickUp suits teams that want briefs, calendars, whiteboards and proofing in one place at a lower price.

Agencies and freelancers

ClickUp's low price, native time tracking and client-shareable dashboards suit agencies; Asana's unlimited free guests make client collaboration simple. Solo freelancers will find ClickUp's free plan more capable than Asana Personal.

How to switch between Asana and ClickUp

Moving from Asana to ClickUp is the better-supported direction. ClickUp has a built-in Asana importer that maps projects to Spaces, Folders or Lists, and lets you turn Asana sections into statuses, Lists or label fields. According to ClickUp's help centre, some items are not imported automatically, including nested subtasks, tasks shared between several projects, recurring tasks, private tasks and @mentions, and on the free plan you should check the 60MB storage limit before importing attachments. Imports take from about a minute to a few hours depending on volume.

Moving from ClickUp to Asana uses Asana's CSV importer: export a ClickUp view to CSV, then map the columns to Asana fields, creating matching custom fields first.

  1. Rebuild one live project in the new tool during the trial, including automations, forms and the dashboard you rely on.
  2. Agree the structure first: Spaces, Folders and Lists in ClickUp, or teams, projects and sections in Asana.
  3. Import active work only and export completed projects as an archive.
  4. Fix the items importers miss, such as recurring tasks and multi-project tasks, by hand.
  5. Run both tools in parallel for a week or two, then switch off the old one.
